Booking your Practical Test

The driving practical test is a hands-on assessment of a learner driver's ability to operate a vehicle safely and competently under real-world conditions. It is the final step in obtaining a full driving license in many countries, including the United Kingdom.

Key components of Practical driving Test

Eyesight Check

  • Before the test begins, the examiner will ask the candidate to read a vehicle number plate from a distance of 20 meters (or 20.5 meters for old-style plates).
  • Failing the eyesight check means the test cannot proceed.

Vehicle Safety Questions (Show me Tell Me Questions)

The candidate will be asked two vehicle safety questions. One "Tell Me" question at the start of the test (where the candidate explains how to carry out a safety task) and one "Show Me" question during the drive (where the candidate demonstrates a safety task, such as operating the windscreen wipers).

Driving Skills Assessments

  • General Driving: The candidate will drive in various road and traffic conditions. This includes a mix of city driving, rural roads, and potentially dual carriageways.
  • Manoeuvres: The candidate will be asked to perform one or more specific maneuvers, such as:
    • Parallel parking at the side of the road.
    • Parking in a parking bay (either reversing in or driving in and reversing out).
    • Pulling up on the right-hand side of the road, reversing for two car lengths, and rejoining traffic.

Independent Drive

This part of the test lasts around 20 minutes. The candidate will either follow directions from a sat nav or follow road signs to a destination. The examiner will specify which method will be used.

If possible, practice driving with a qualified supervising driver outside of formal lessons.

Mock Driving Tests

Simulating the test conditions with your instructor can help reduce anxiety and identify areas needing improvement.

Familiarise with test routes

While the exact test route cannot be predicted, becoming familiar with the types of roads and junctions in the test area can be helpful.

Pass certificate

If you pass, you will receive a pass certificate and can apply for a full driving license.

Next steps if failed
